On the 28th (local time), during a Thanksgiving visit to the Nantucket fire department in Massachusetts, President Biden responded to a question about President-elect Trump’s tariff plan by saying, “I hope he reconsiders.”

“It’s counterproductive,” he said. “We’re surrounded by the Pacific, the Atlantic and our two allies, Mexico and Canada. We shouldn’t start ruining those relationships.”

Previously, on the 25th, President-elect Trump announced that he would sign an executive order imposing an additional 10% tariff on China and 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada on his first day in office on January 20th next year. He said there was an influx of illegal immigrants from Mexico and Canada and that he would impose tariffs until the two countries resolved the issue.

In addition, President Biden said he spoke with three Americans who had been imprisoned in China on espionage and drug charges but were released the day before under a prisoner exchange agreement, and said, “I’m really happy they’re home.”

Regarding relations between the US and China, he said, “We have set up a hotline between Chinese President Xi Jinping and myself, and a direct line of communication between the military. I am sure that President Xi does not want to misjudge.”
