There is “a real chance that Ukraine can prevail” in the war against Russia if the country continues to receive the Western support that the Biden administration has set an example for.
This is what the President of the United States, Joe Biden, tells reporters in the White House, about ten days before Donald Trump takes office.
– Putin is in a difficult situation right now, and I think it is very important that he is not given any leeway to continue doing the terrible things that he continues to do, he says.
According to the outgoing president, Putin’s difficult position is due, among other things, to the fact that the United States and Great Britain introduced extensive sanctions against Russia’s energy sector on Friday. This applies, among others, to the oil giant Gazprom Neft.
Britain also believes that the sanctions are putting pressure on Russia, says Foreign Minister David Lammy in a statement.
– Going after Russian oil companies will drain Russia’s war coffers, and every ruble we take from Putin’s hands helps save Ukrainian lives, he says.
Biden spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday. Here, Zelenskyj thanked Biden for America’s “unwavering support”, Zelenskyj writes on X.
The outgoing president has tried to send as much support to Ukraine as possible before he leaves office. It is feared that the Republicans will sharply cut the support.
The Biden administration announced nearly $6 billion in new military and economic aid last month.
Trump claims he can resolve the conflict between Ukraine and Russia in “24 hours” when he takes office, sparking fears that Ukraine will have to give up land in exchange for peace.
Russia advanced further into Ukraine last year because the overburdened and exhausted Ukrainian army is running out of manpower.
