Every year, the Unicode Consortium publishes new emoji characters that we will soon find on our smartphones. This week he revealed his proposals for Unicode 17and among the new features we find legendary creatures, new expressive faces and a treasure chest. Coolest emojis include a furry Bigfoot, orca, trumpet, avalanche, and distorted face, with new skin color variations for icons like ballet dancers and wrestlers.
These initial designs are not the final versions we’ll see on iOS, as the Unicode Consortium only provides the basic codes and guidelines. Apple designers, therefore, will add their distinctive touch when the Unicode 17 standard is made official. This approval is expected in fall 2025, and we can expect Apple to introduce them around spring 2026, maintaining the typical release cadence.
Meanwhile, Apple will soon introduce Unicode 16 emojis, approved last September 2024. Among these there will be a face with dark circles, a fingerprint, a bare tree, a musical instrument such as a harp and much more.
Regarding emojis, the most interesting news is the introduction of a new feature called Genmoji, which will arrive with iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.2. These customizable emojis use Apple Intelligence to generate images based on a user-entered phrase. But be careful: these Genmoji they will be exclusive to Apple devices, so they will not be visible on other platforms such as Android.
