bikers take legal action

The bikers have decided to take legal action to challenge the reduction in the limit to 50 km/h on the Paris ring road.

The Paris town hall continues to multiply actions to make life difficult for motorists, with one goal: to dissuade them from coming to drive in the capital. This involves massive pedestrianization, but also the establishment of a ZTL (limited traffic zone) in the first four districts. Without forgetting the reduction in the speed limit on the ring road. Measures which are obviously not unanimous among drivers.

Bikers angry for the ring road

And to say that the drop in speed on the ring road is not pleasing is actually an understatement. Indeed, since the establishment of the speed limit of 50 km/h on the Paris ring road, the debate continues to intensify. The measure, implemented as part of efforts to reduce pollution and improve road safety, does not convince everyone, particularly among associations of road users and two of them particularly mobilized against this restriction: the French Federation of Angry Bikers (FFMC) and the League for the Defense of Drivers (LDC).

Together, they launched a class action to challenge this decision, hoping to bring together many motorists and bikers for a class action. To allow each citizen to support this opposition, the FFMC offers a simplified procedure accessible to all. The principle is simple: each person concerned can “contribute to the appeal brought by a specialized law firm”, as the organization indicates in its press release. The cost of participation is 12 euros per person or 60 euros for an association.

A major legal action

These contributions will be used to cover the legal costs necessary to bring the matter to courtthus offering everyone the opportunity to make themselves heard against this measure, which they consider unfair and punitive for users of the ring road. The initiative targets a broad audience. It is open to motorists, bikers and truck drivers, whether private or professional, from the Ile-de-France region or from the provinces, and whether they use the ring road on a regular or occasional basis. The official website also specifies that this approach is aimed at associations of drivers, motorcyclists and transport professionals, as well as any organization linked to transport.

Even elected officials from Île-de-France municipalities are invited to join this collective action if they wish. The stated objective is to create a “Collective 1,000 against 50”, with the ambition of bringing together at least 1,000 participants, whether motorists or bikers. Through this collective, the associations hope to show that the speed limit of 50 km/h arouses real discontent among users of the Paris ring road.

Opponents say that reducing speed could lead to longer travel times, thereby increasing the risk of congestion and pollutant emissions. The filing of the appeal is scheduled for November 29, and registrations are still open. To date, the collective action has already brought together more than 300 participants.
