Biometric authentication and anti-theft protection

The security of mobile devices is becoming a priority for Google, which is preparing a series of updates for its services.

The announced changes mainly target the Find My Device app and the Chrome browser for users of devices running Android.

Biometric authentication

One new feature discovered in the Find My Device version 3.1.173-1 code is the addition of biometric authentication.

This long-awaited feature will allow users to access the app using their face scan, fingerprint or a PIN code.

In other words, we will no longer need to enter the Google account password every time.

Unlike the current system, which allows you to completely disable authentication by checking the “Don’t ask again” option, the new version focuses on data security.

Biometric authentication will be enabled by default, ensuring that only the owner of the phone can access information about their connected devices.

Interface optimized for tablets

In addition to security improvements, Google is also preparing a visual overhaul of the Find My Device app for tablet users.

The current design, which uses a sliding panel at the bottom, will be replaced with a side panel.

This change will optimize the available screen space, providing a wider view of the map and a much improved user experience.

Identity Check: Advanced protection against theft

One of the most promising developments is the Identity Check feature for Google Chrome on Android.

This feature will force apps to use biometric authentication when the phone is outside of a trusted location, providing an extra layer of protection against thieves who might learn the device’s PIN.

The functionality is similar to Apple’s Stolen Device Protection system and will be available with the release of Android 15 QPR1, which is scheduled for December this year.

Gradual implementation

The Find My Device network continues to expand its capabilities, recently being integrated into the Google Home app for select users.

These updates are all the more relevant in today’s context, when our smartphones contain an increasing amount of personal, medical and financial data that we want to keep safe from thieves forever (if possible).
