‘Why would your friends start using Bitcoin if you don’t too?’. Bart Mol from Knowledge Platform Bitcoin Alpha opened Day 2 of Bitcoin Amsterdam with that question. Under the title Use it or Lose it! Mol warned that Bitcoin will become a Dodo, a bird that can no longer fly.
Spend Bitcoin, buy a hamburger or something else with it if necessary, Mol suggested. Why would you spend those dirty euros or dollars? Bitcoin was created to be used, otherwise the blockchain (the underlying ledger) cannot be sufficiently supported. Stay away from bitcoin funds (ETFs), otherwise it will be the banks and asset managers that will determine the market. ‘Start running your own nodes, it doesn’t have to cost much, and start mining Bitcoin yourself, to prevent Bitcoin mining from becoming increasingly centralized: only four mining pools control eighty percent of the hashrate (computing power of the Bitcoin network). ‘
