Black magic: Blackpeak by AV Stumpfl in the Flint Theater

The Flint Theater, located in the historic center of Amersfoort in the Netherlands, recently expanded its visual possibilities by installing a projection screen from AV Stumpfl’s award-winning Blackpeak series. The decision to install the projection screen, supplied by AED Display, the exclusive Benelux distributor for AV Stumpfl’s Blackpeak screens, was driven by the desire to improve the visual experience at theater performances, business events and film screenings.

According to Jos Houweling, AV specialist at Flint, the corporate events market is constantly evolving, with visual requirements ranging from simple PowerPoint presentations to content-rich, high-resolution videos and images. Therefore, the theater needed a projection surface that could deliver this while remaining visually unobtrusive.
Carrol van Russel, sales manager of AED Display, reports on the beginnings of the project. “We launched Blackpeak at a special session a year ago, and as soon as the Flint team saw the screen, they were immediately impressed and wanted it.” The team realized that the screen blended seamlessly into the dark environment of the theater and at the same time enhances corporate events and theater performances. Jos Houweling, AV specialist at Flint, confirms: “AED Display gave us an excellent demo and valuable advice.”
The screen was installed in the theater hall, positioned centrally on the stage wall. The installation process was easy, explains van Russel: “The team used the frames, stretched the screen and attached it to the frames.” He goes on to praise the frames: “I am convinced that they are among the best in the world.”

Perfect canvas for a dark environment
The 5.08 by 2.94 meter screen is a great advantage for the Flint. Its black design allows it to blend in perfectly with its surroundings, keeping the focus on the performance. “The screen fits seamlessly into the theater environment. During dark periods and low lighting, no white screen is visible on the stage; “It adapts perfectly to the decor and takes performances and corporate events to a new level,” enthuses Houweling.
Carrol van Russel, Van Russel further highlights the advantages of the screen: “During theater performances, when the environment is dark, Flint can project onto the Blackpeak screen, without unwanted light reflections. In my opinion, BLACKPEAK is a real game-changer.” Traditional projection screens, on the other hand, would often suffer from image washout and loss of important details due to ambient light. Blackpeak overcomes this challenge by delivering deeper blacks and more vivid contrasts, ensuring a superior viewing experience.
With the introduction of the Blackpeak screen, Flint was able to achieve visual experiences that were previously unattainable with a white projection screen. Van Russel explains: “A white screen reflects a significant amount of ambient light, which can impact the viewing experience. A black screen, on the other hand, offers superior clarity with deeper and more precise blacks.”
Houweling is pleased: “The screen is a real eye-catcher – although it fits in perfectly so that sometimes we don’t even see it.”
