Several candidates for the position of president of Romania transmitted wrong information in their statements at the electoral debate organized by the Digi 24 channel, on the evening of November 18, 2024.

Misstatements occurred mostly when a candidate had to answer a question posed by another candidate.

Elena Lasconi, regarding the city of Câmpulung Muscel, which she leads as mayor: “We have attracted European funds as much as the city’s budget for 40 years.

Verdict: FALSE (fit Factual.ro)

During the mandates of Elena Lasconi, the mayor’s office led by her effectively received European funds in the amount of 35.6 million lei (35,627,822.67 lei). The expenses recorded in the budget during the analyzed period are higher than the total EU funds extracted from the budget executions and than the contracted amount that the City Hall sent us. Obviously, the volume of European funds attracted is significantly higher than in previous periods, but it is a major exaggeration to say that this value, attracted in the form of European funds, would be as much as the municipality’s budget over a period of 40 years.

Mircea Geoană: “The Polish model is interesting (…) they have finished with corruption”

Verdict: FALS

According to Transparency.org’s Corruption Barometer, in 2023 Poland was ranked 47th out of 180 in the ranking of the most corrupt countries in the world. This position shows that Poland is far from eradicating corruption. Romania, in the same year, actually occupied an even weaker place, i.e. the 63rd place out of 180.

At the same time, a 2019 report by GRECO, a Council of Europe watchdog that monitors compliance with anti-corruption standards, described Poland as “globally unsatisfactory” when it comes to assessing progress related to fighting corruption.

The report pointed out that Poland had implemented only 7 of 16 general recommendations and only 1 of 6 recommendations on controversial judicial reforms from 2016-2018. Mircea Geoană’s claim that Poland is done with corruption is false.

Elena Lasconi: Romania must make a decision regarding the Palestinian state

Verdict: FALS

According to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), Romania has already recognized the Palestinian state. “Romania recognized Palestine on November 16, 1988. On this basis, in January 1989, the Permanent Representation of the OEP in Bucharest was elevated to the rank of embassy of Palestine,” states the MFA website.

Elena Lasconi: “For the provision of armed forces, so that we can prepare, because even in case… If Article 5 of NATO were violated, that would mean that we must arm ourselves. Let’s resist for at least 30 days “

Verdict: FALS

Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty nowhere mentions the 30-day waiting period in case Romania is attacked militarily by another country.

Article 5 refers to immediate assistance by NATO member countries in the event of an armed attack by another country.

George Simion: The health system must be rethought in terms of ambulances. We have to decide what we want because they are not subordinate to the Ministry of Health.

Verdict: FALS

Both the County Ambulance Services (SAJ) and the Bucharest-Ilfov Ambulance service are subordinate to the Ministry of Health. George Simion probably confuses the ambulance service with SMURD, which is not under the Ministry of Health, but under the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), which in turn is under the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
