Blind Spot, Volvo Trucks updates its ADAS

Often the driving assistance and safety technologies present on heavy vehicles are more up to date than those of cars, this is because the professional use of these vehicles involves a greater presence on the roads, also because their dimensions and weights certainly require plus a few more “eyes” to be managed

In this scenario the situations of heavy traffic they pose daily risks to the safety of the most vulnerable road users, especially compared to very large and cumbersome vehicles and unfortunately the news of recent times has given sad testimony to this. For this reason, Volvo Trucksthe Volvo Group brand dedicated to trucks, is introducing two new safety systems with the aim of protect i pedestrians and cyclists.

Side impact assistant

Volvo Trucks’ goal is to constantly develop its active safety systems to protect vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians, with the aim of moving closer to the company’s long-term vision of zero accidents involving Volvo trucks. The latest example in chronological order is l’Active Side Collision Avoidance Support of Volvo, where the key word is “active”.

It’s about an evolution of a security system existingwith the addition of the function braking active. Using radar sensors to detect approaching cyclists, the system can warn the driver and, if necessary, actively brake the truck to avoid a collision with cyclists when turning towards the passenger side. The Active Side Collision Avoidance Support system will be available to customers from November 2024 for Volvo FH, FM and FMX range models in all markets globally.

New generation emergency braking system

The second system updated by Volvo Trucks consists of the new generation of Collision Warning with emergency braking. This system was first introduced in 2012 and has been continuously improved since then. It uses both cameras and radar sensors to monitor traffic in front of the truck and, if a risk of collision is detected, the system is designed to warn the driver and, if necessary, brake automatically to avoid or mitigate the collision.

Con i latest improvementsthis system can detect, warn and brake not only for other vehicles, but also for pedestrians and cyclists. It has been certified to meet the new, more rigorous European regulation for Advanced Emergency Braking Systems which will only come into force in 2028. Furthermore, Volvo Trucks’ system exceeds upcoming regulations in terms of the traffic situations it is designed to cover. This automatic braking system will standard equipment in Europe on all FH, FM and FMX series trucks starting in 2025 and will be available as an option globally.
