Blinken arrived in Brussels on Tuesday evening and is scheduled to meet today with NATO Secretary General Mark Ritti, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Jousepa Borrell and former Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, who is nominated for the post of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and is likely to replace Borrell in the important post, as well as Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrija Sibih.
Trump’s victory in the US presidential election and the political crisis in Germany have heightened concerns about future aid to Ukraine, which is facing perhaps the worst winter since the start of the war.
Trump has promised to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours, without explaining exactly how he is going to do it, but together with Trump, the elected vice president Jay Dee Vance has supported the idea of freezing the conflict.
The Biden administration has made clear that in the weeks remaining before Trump’s inauguration, it plans to advance the remaining more than $9 billion in funding that Congress has appropriated for arms and other military assistance to Ukraine. However, despite Kiev’s pleas, Washington appears unlikely to lift a ban on Ukraine using long-range missiles to strike targets deep inside Russian territory.
