Blizzard releases Warcraft 1 and 2 Remastered

Warcraft is celebrating its 30th anniversary, and so is Blizzard, so it’s going to be great. A leak last week revealed that a Remastered version of Warcraft 2 appeared to be on the way, but now the company has surprised by releasing both the original and the sequel in much-anticipated re-releases.

Blizzard’s developers have redrawn all the graphics in the games by hand, and players can toggle the new image resources on and off to switch between the original graphics and the new one. Music and audio are also included without compression, and Blizzard has added UI improvements taken from later games like Warcraft 3. These include health indicators over each unit, the ability to select multiple units in a group, and helpful hotkey indicators.

The company has also dug into the archives and the games include concept images and other things that have never been shown before.

Warcraft 2 also includes the expansion Beyond the Dark Portal and not least multiplayer for up to eight players via Battle.net.

Unlike the originals which were released for both Windows and Mac, the Remastered versions only work on Windows 10 and up. But with low system requirements, it is quite possible that even Mac users will be able to relive Azeroth with the help of, for example, Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit.

The games are sold individually or together with Warcraft 3: Reforged – which at the same time receives a major update to version 2.0 – in Warcraft Remastered Battle Chest.
