Prostate cancer is more likely to recur after successful surgery in men with blood type A than in men with blood type 0 – this is the result of a Japanese study.
In their study, scientists from Tokyo Medical University described for the first time that blood type may play a role in the recurrence of prostate cancer. In their research, they showed that men with blood group 0 are far less likely to have the tumor reappear after surgeryon the other hand, with blood group A, the chance of developing prostate cancer is 35 percent higher, the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among European men, with 40,000 new cases diagnosed each year in Great Britain alone..
The reasons are being investigated
Ohno Josio, a researcher at Tokyo Medical University and the author of the study, said: they do not yet know why one blood group poses a greater risk of recurrence than the other, but the discovery could lead prostate cancer research to new paths.
The study was presented at the European Association of Urology (EAU) annual congress in Stockholm this week. During the research, 555 patients with prostate cancer were followed between 2004 and 2010.
Blood types are categorized based on the different antigens and antibodies found in the blood. According to the traditional classification, people can be classified into blood types A, B, AB and 0.
A blood type is the most common in the UK, with 44 percent of the population having this blood type and 42 percent having type A blood.
In the past, other types of cancer, such as stomach and pancreatic cancer, have also been observed to have different risks depending on blood group.
