BMW is going through a difficult period in China where demand has slowed down. In addition, approximately 1.5 million vehicles are affected by a potentially defective integrated braking system supplied by Continental. This includes 320,000 vehicles that have not yet been delivered to customers. These unforeseen problems have now halted production at the company’s largest plant in Europe.
Located in southern Bavaria, the Dingolfing location is currently on hiatus. It stopped making cars on Thursday afternoon (September 12) and won’t resume until Tuesday morning (September 17). A BMW spokesperson confirmed to Automobilewoche that the pause in production was caused by the two problems mentioned at the beginning of the article.
In 2023, BMW produced 291,907 cars at the Dingolfing plant, making it the fourth most productive location, after Dadong (China), Spartanburg (USA) and Tiesi (China). The new M5 sedan and M5 Touring are made there, along with the regular 5 Series models. In addition, the 4 Series and M4 models are also produced there. The flagship 7 Series sedan and all-electric iX are assembled at the same German site as the 8 Series.
The Dingolfing location employs around 18,500 people along with around 900 apprentices.
In 2023, the German factory celebrated half a century of car production, during which more than 12 million vehicles were built. In addition to the production of cars, the location in Lower Bavaria also produces electric motors, about 1.5 million to date. Also, bodies for Rolls-Royce vehicles are produced there.
