Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was directly involved in the plans for a coup after his election defeat in 2022 and had knowledge of concrete plans to kill Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
This appears from a formal accusation by the police, which has been brought against Bolsonaro, and which can be read in an 884-page long police report, writes Reuters.
Jair Bolsonaro lost the 2022 presidential election to the left-wing candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
A few days after Lula was installed as the new president on January 1, 2023, Bolsonaro’s supporters stormed the country’s parliament and Supreme Court.
This is what the police have investigated as an attempted coup.
On Thursday last week it emerged that Brazilian police suspected Bolsonaro of having been involved in the plans for a coup, and on Tuesday more details of the formal charge against the former president were published.
Admiral is also accused
One of the pieces of evidence the police are basing their accusation on is a meeting that Bolsonaro held in December 2022 with the heads of the army, air force and navy respectively in Brazil.
Here, Bolsonaro presented the three military commanders with concrete plans for the coup d’état and asked them to take part in it.
The heads of the army and air force refused to take part, while the then supreme commander of the navy, now retired Admiral Almir Garnier, was ready to support the plans.
Garnier is one of 37 people – in addition to Bolsonaro – who are accused in the case. Most are retired military personnel.
Bolsonaro pleads not guilty.
On Tuesday, the contents of the 884-page police report were made public.
Here it appears that Bolsonaro was responsible for drafting a plan for the coup, which was supposed to prevent Lula da Silva from assuming the presidency.
The police have also come to the conclusion that Bolsonaro knew of assassination plans aimed at Lula da Silva and the then incoming vice president, Geraldo Alckmin.
This is based on telephone conversations and information from meetings held at the presidential residence Alvorada.
