Bolsonaro planned the coup and knew about the plan to kill Lula, concludes Brazilian Federal Police

The Brazilian Federal Police concluded that former president Jair Bolsonaro “planned, acted and directly controlled” the attempted coup d’état and knew of the plan to kill Lula da Silva, it was announced this Tuesday.

“The evidence obtained throughout the investigation unequivocally demonstrates that the then President of the Republic, Jair Messias Bolsonaro, planned, acted and had direct and effective control over the executional acts carried out by the criminal organization that aimed to achieve a Coup d’état and the Abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law”, reads the report made public by the Federal Supreme Court.

According to the Federal Police, the coup d’état did not take place “due to circumstances beyond its control”.

Furthermore, police authorities believe that the former Brazilian president had “full knowledge” of a military plan to assassinate the then-elected President, Lula da Silva, by poisoning after the 2022 elections.

The plan also aimed to kill elected vice president Geraldo Alckmin and Federal Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes.

In the statement with more than 800 pages, the Federal Police indicates that “Jair Bolsonaro was fully aware of the operational planning (Punhal Verde and Amarelo), as well as the clandestine actions carried out under the name World Cup 2022”.

The plan dubbed “Punhal Verde Amarelo”, in reference to the colors of the Brazilian flag, was printed at the presidential palace, according to the Federal Police.

“There is evidence in the file demonstrating that on November 9, 2022, after preparing and printing the document at the Planalto palace, (general) Mário Fernandes went to the Alvorada palace, where President Jair Bolsonaro was,” reads yourself.

The summary of the investigation gives a detailed account of the turbulent political process unleashed in Brazil after the elections of October 30, 2022, in which Lula da Silva beat Bolsonaro, then in power, by a slim margin of less than two points, in a result not recognized by the now former president.

Among the 37 accused are some active and retired military leaders, former ministers, people close to Bolsonaro and even Valdemar Costa Neto, president of the Liberal Party (PL), which the former president leads.

The report contains hundreds of messages exchanged by those involved, as well as audio and images.

The report is known after the Federal Supreme Court (STF) of Brazil sent it today to the Attorney General’s Office and removed the judicial secrecy.

Once analyzed, the MP will decide whether there is sufficient evidence to denounce the former Brazilian head of state and the others involved before the Federal Supreme Court itself.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office has 15 days to file the complaint, but this period can be extended if it wishes to request more information.

After the elections, there were roadblocks by truck drivers, Bolsonaro camps in front of barracks calling for military intervention and serious riots in Brasília, including an attempted bomb attack near the Brazilian capital’s airport.

During this period, the Federal Police suspect that a plan was drawn up to take place on January 1, 2023, the day of Lula da Silva’s inauguration and two days after Bolsonaro, still without recognizing his defeat, traveled to the United States United States, where he remained for three months.

On January 8, 2023, while the new Brazilian President, Lula da Silva, was outside Brasília visiting the city of Araraquara, in the state of São Paulo, which had been hit by severe rain, a group of radicals, supporters of the Former President Jair Bolsonaro, influenced by months of misinformation about electronic voting machines and fear of communism, invaded and attacked the Palácio do Planalto, Congress and the Supreme Court Federal.

The attack in Brasília was similar to the one that occurred in the United States by supporters of the then former President, Donald Trump, defeated at the polls, before the inauguration of the current North American head of state, Joe Biden, on January 6, 2021.
