Bad news is piling up in German industry. The automotive supplier Bosch announced on Friday November 22 that it was planning 5,550 new job cuts worldwide, including 3,850 targeting Germany. “The automotive industry has significant excess capacity and the market for future technologies is not developing as expected,” the company explains in a press release.
3,500 jobs cut in electronic systems
The giant’s software development division plans to cut 3,500 jobs around the world by 2027, half of which will be in Germany. When it was created in 2020, this vertical aimed to conquer the automotive market for electronic systems with a strong software component. This wave would be added to the previous one, announced at the start of the year, aimed at eliminating 1,200 jobs in this same division by 2026. “We do not anticipate any direct impact of the plans announced today by this division on our activities in France”a Bosch spokesperson told L’Usine Nouvelle.
Factories are also affected. Across the Rhine, the German factory in Schwäbisch Gmünd would be the most heavily impacted: up to 1,300 jobs could be eliminated between 2027 and 2030. Its compatriot in Hildesheim must eliminate 600 positions by the end of 2026, then 150 additional by 2032. The group must begin discussions with staff representatives “soon”.
In France, the German group announced, in July, the closure of its Mondeville (Calvados) factory, scheduled for June 2026. Specializing in the manufacture of electronic parts for automobiles, the site has 413 employees, half of whom will be eligible. to early retirement. Two months earlier, in May, management also announced the closure of its factory in Marignier (Haute-Savoie), which employs 153 people.
In Aveyron, the future of the Rodez site remains uncertain, after a diversification project failed. Focused on production linked almost exclusively to diesel vehicles, the Aveyron site saw its workforce drop to 750 employees at the end of 2023, compared to 1,250 full-time equivalents at the end of 2021.
