Both the DPRK and Russia ratified the Mutual Defense Treaty

Pyongyang/Moscow – North Korea has completed the ratification of the mutual defense treaty with Russia. According to the AFP agency, North Korean state media reported about it. Moscow announced over the weekend that Russian President Vladimir Putin had also signed the agreement after the document was approved by both houses of the Russian parliament. According to the West, the DPRK sent its soldiers to help Russia in the fighting in Ukraine.

The treaty, signed by Russian President Putin with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during a visit to Pyongyang in June, includes provisions for mutual military assistance. North Korea’s state news agency KCNA said the treaty was ratified by the DPRK earlier today.

On Saturday evening, according to AFP, the Kremlin issued a law ratifying a military treaty with the DPRK. It was approved by Russian lawmakers and then signed by Russian President Putin. However, the Russian parliament is firmly under the control of Putin and his government representatives.

The treaty is the result of a significant rapprochement between Russia and the DPRK after the start of the invasion of Ukraine in February of last year. Previously, according to the West, North Korea supplied Russia with artillery ammunition. In recent months, the DPRK has sent several thousand of its soldiers to Russia, who, according to Ukrainian officials, have already intervened in the fighting in Ukraine alongside the Russians in some cases. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said last week that, according to his estimate, there are 11,000 North Korean soldiers in Russia.

Putin did not deny the presence of DPRK soldiers in his country. According to analysts, the Russian army could deploy detachments of North Korean soldiers during the fighting in Russia’s Kursk region, part of which is controlled by the Ukrainian army.
