Boxing, heavyweight | Joshua vs. Dubois: Trainer missing, rumors about hand injury

Shortly before the boxing spectacle against Anthony Joshua, heavyweight boxer Daniel Dubois has to do without his trainer. This is what is behind it.

On Saturday evening, the heavyweight clash between Anthony Joshua and IBF champion Daniel Dubois will take place at Wembley Stadium. In the fight against his compatriot, Dubois wants to defend his inherited belt.

Unification world champion Oleksandr Usyk had given up the IBF belt in the summer, thus avoiding withdrawal in accordance with the statutes. Dubois, the interim world champion, thus became the official world champion.

Shortly before the “Battle of Britain”, however, coach Don Charles was missing from Dubois’ side. He was not present at Dubois’ public workout and is not expected at his protégé’s press conference either. The simple reason: the coach had an infection.

The coach’s son confirmed to Sky Sports: “No secret, no trick, no plan to unsettle anyone.”

Assistant coach Kieran Farrell also spoke clearly. He stressed that Dubois had not suffered any injury to his hand. “Daniel has no injury to his right hand,” he told Sky Sports, “he injured my hands with the force of his punches!” Farrell continued.

Don Charles has coached the Brit’s last three fights. Experts see him as one of the key factors in Dubois getting his career under control. After a controversial defeat against Usyk in the summer of 2023, he celebrated two somewhat unexpected victories against Jarrell Miller and most recently Filip Hrgovic. AJ has also recently come back with convincing victories.

The duel next Saturday is eagerly awaited and will set a record. Wembley Stadium is sold out with 96,000 spectators; never before has a fight taken place in the motherland of boxing in front of such a larger crowd.
