Pirate streaming site Braflix has announced its closure after receiving legal warnings from the City of London Police and the Motion Picture Association (MPA). Launched last year, the portal had quickly become popular by offering films and TV series subtitled in different languages.
The decision to shut down comes after months of legal pressure against Braflix: in June, the site was the subject of a DMCA subpoena obtained by MPA and ACE. In August, the MPA reported it as serious threat of piracy in an EU consultation. Despite attempts to evade legal action by changing domains several times, the operators ultimately decided to give up.
“We regret that we cannot continue fighting for our cause of free entertainment for all, but we have too much to lose, so the best option is to stop,” Braflix said in a message on Discord.
The site, which had amassed more than a million monthly visits, remained online despite legal pressure until today’s announcement. The operators said they have sent the domain transfer keys to the complaining parties, expecting that it will soon redirect to ACE’s “watch legally” page.
The voluntary closure of Braflix in the face of legal pressure is not an isolated case, although it must be said that users of these sites are now accustomed to this cycle. Shutdowns, once considered significant events, have now become common occurrences, with most pirates simply moving on to the next available streaming portal.
