Brazil’s trade surplus falls by almost 25% in 2024 – Americas

Brazil achieved a trade surplus of 74.6 billion dollars (71.8 billion euros) in 2024, the second best balance in its history, but 24.6% less than in 2023, he said this Monday the Brazilian Government.

Brazilian exports amounted to 337 billion dollars (324 million euros) in 2024, 0.8% less than in the previous year, according to the report released by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.

However, imports increased by 9% in annual terms, reaching a value of 262.5 billion dollars (252.6 billion euros).

Brazil, the most powerful economy in Latin America, recorded in 2024 the second highest annual values ​​for both exports and imports since statistics exist, at a time of strong depreciation of the Brazilian real.

By sector, agriculture and livestock reduced exports in value by 11%, while national extractive and processing industries increased by 2.4% and 2.7%, respectively.

In this context, Brazil exported less soybeans and corn last year, but sold more oil and cellulose abroad.

By country, China, the main trading partner, continued to be the main destination for Brazilian exports, with a share of 28.5% of the total, which translated into revenues of almost US$96 billion (92.4 billion euros) , around 9% less than in 2023.

In second and third place were the European Union (EU) and the United States, with increases of 4.2% and 9.2% in terms of value collected.

According to the Ministry of Commerce, Brazil’s forecast for 2025 is to export between 320 and 360 billion dollars and import between 260 and 280 billion dollars.
