Brazil’s X ban gives Bluesky 2 million users

Numa publication In a recent announcement on its own platform, Bluesky has announced a massive increase in users, adding 2.6 million people in the last few days. Thanks to Brazil’s ban on X, this is a significant growth for the service, which previously had around 8.8 million users in total.

85% of new users are Brazilian

Numa update On its blog, Bluesky shared that more than 85% of these new people came from Brazil, which translates into more than 2 million users from this country alone.

The dramatic change comes in the wake of a ruling by Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, which instructed local internet providers to block access to Xthe platform formerly known as Twitter.

This decision was made after X refused to take down accounts accused of spreading misinformation. In addition, Moraes ordered Apple and Google to remove X from their respective app stores.

Individuals who try to bypass the block with VPNs face fines of 50,000 reais (about $8,900). The Brazilian Supreme Court recently reaffirmed the ban, with the support of all judges. Elon Musk, X's CEO, accused Moraes of using the legal system to "undermine" democracy. The platform also launched a profile called Alexandre Files, with the aim of exposing what he described as injustices committed by the judge.

Bluesky is one of the most benefited social networks

As X is no longer available in Brazil, users have migrated to other social networks, and Bluesky has been one of the main beneficiaries. The platform saw a spike in daily activity, including an increase in new followers, likes and posts, particularly in the last few days of August.

While Bluesky is still developing its feature set and is yet to rival X 100%, the platform has recently hinted that its next update will introduce video functionality, which can help retain your new audience.

Other statistics reveal the scale of what is happening. Comparing the period from August 30 to September 2 with a similar period the previous month, Bluesky recorded a jump in likes from 13 million to 104.6 million, in followers from 1.4 million to 100.8 million and in reposts from 1.3 million to 11 million.
