BREAKING NEWS: Forest fire in Hatay Arsuz! Flames threaten residential areas

A fire broke out in the forest area in Kozaklı District of Hatay’s Arsuz district at around 11.40 today for an unknown reason.

Upon notice, Regional Directorate of Forestry teams, extinguishing helicopters and water trucks were directed to the region.

Teams intervened from air and land to extinguish the fire. The flames reached the settlements in Harlısu District with the influence of the wind.

The extinguishing efforts, supported by teams from surrounding provinces, are continuing from land due to the darkening weather.

Why did the fire break out?

Hatay Governor Mustafa Masatlı came to the fire area, inspected it and received information from the teams about the work.

Masatlı stated that the teams are continuing their work in Harlısu District, where the fire spread, and continued: “The fire probably started from the electricity pole. Of course, in general, the meteorology for our city today had warned that the wind would be strong. However, especially in our Kozaklı District, and then from there to Harlısu.” “The fire has spread to our neighborhood. The fire is currently under control in Kozaklı District, but our teams are also working in Harlısu. As of now, 153 vehicles and 523 personnel are trying to control the fire. Hopefully, we will bring the fire under control in the coming hours as the wind reduces its intensity.”

Stating that all vehicles of the Regional Directorate of Forestry, AFAD, Provincial Gendarmerie Command, Provincial Police Department, fire brigades and public institutions and organizations were dispatched to the region, Masatlı stated that the work is being carried out meticulously.

Four houses and two barns were affected

Stating that there has been no loss of life as of now, Masatlı said, “Only 4 of our houses in Harlısu District were partially affected by the fire, and 2 of our barns were damaged. We think that these damages will remain at this extent.” he said.
