“Leicestershire, year 1984. Alec Jeffreys (John Simm, Life of Mars) working at the University of Leicester develops a method that can be used to identify each person’s unique DNA fingerprint. Four miles away, Detective Inspector David Baker (David Threlfall, Shameless) leads the investigation into the murder of a local schoolgirl. Two years later, another schoolgirl is found, also strangled. Soon the young man is arrested and confesses to the murder of the second girl, but denies his involvement in the first. Believing that the killer is the same, Baker turns to Jeffreys to get a DNA test. Could Jeffreys’ test show a link between the suspect’s DNA and the murdered girls? Jeffreys hesitated, as the DNA samples from the crime scene investigation might be of low quality. However, the test works: the killer of both girls is the same person – but not this suspect. A false confession is revealed, and a DNA test saves the innocent. The suspect is released, and the use of DNA fingerprints in criminal investigations causes an uproar. Baker still believes the killer is local and proposes the world’s first DNA screening: more than five thousand local men will be tested to catch the culprit before he strikes again.”
