President Yoon Seok-yeol, who is visiting Brazil to attend the G20 summit, held a summit meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the 19th (local time) and discussed major issues, including responses to illegal military cooperation between North Korea and Russia.
The two leaders evaluated that cooperation in each field, including national defense and defense industry, economy and trade, and climate change, is progressing smoothly based on the ‘Downing Street Agreement’ agreed to in November last year. In particular, they decided to cooperate closely to launch the 2+2 Foreign Affairs and Defense Conference between the two countries and to reach an early conclusion in defense industry cooperation and negotiations to improve the Korea-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
President Yoon and Prime Minister Starmer strongly condemned illegal military cooperation between Russia and North Korea and agreed to continue to respond unitedly. They also agreed that the security of Northeast Asia and Europe are closely linked, and decided to stand in solidarity with the international community for peace and reconstruction in Ukraine.
The two countries decided to strengthen cooperation on the international stage, including the UN Security Council, G7, and G20, and continue strategic communication on global issues.
