Critics warn

Despite the optimistic presentation of the event, critics pointed to the high price. The Republic organization called the coronation an “obscene” waste of public money. Their leader Graham Smith publicly stated: “I would be very surprised if the figure of £72 million was the final cost. The Ministry of Defence, fire brigades and local councils also had costs associated with the coronation, so the total is estimated to have been between £100m and £250m. And the official figure, £72 million, is a huge sum spent on an event without a legal obligation. This was the request of King Charles III, which cost taxpayers an unimaginable amount, even though the country is facing a cost-of-living crisis. The whole event was an unnecessary luxury at a time when many children in the country are below the poverty line.”
