Brock Purdy surprises with Brady mindset

In year one, Brock Purdy led the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC Championship Game, and in year two to the Super Bowl. The logical next step would be to win the title, but before the NFL star talks about it, he has other sporting goals first.

In a conversation with Michael Silver of the “San Francisco Chronicle,” the quarterback hopes for significantly more dominance in the games. “With a team as good as we have, I want to get to the point where we reach the third quarter, there are a few decisive drives, I have everything under control, we convert third downs and score touchdowns,” said Purdy.

The playmaker draws a direct comparison to one of the greatest in his field. “It’s a feeling like Tom Brady. Towards the end of the game, I always had the feeling that Tom Brady would take the lead and not let the game slip from his hands. I feel like I can achieve that.”

For Purdy, it’s clearly not about just finishing games with a win, no matter what the cost. “I want to be dominant,” said Purdy. “I don’t just want to win games (…) I want to be dominant, with consistent decisions and the feeling that we are the best players every day.”

“Last year there were moments in games where I just – I don’t know what it was in each situation – but we were ahead and it was like, ‘Okay, be smart with the ball’ or ‘Let’s just make sure we don’t screw it up.’ I want to break through that and get to the point where I’m just dominant, four quarters long, man. That’s my mindset,” the quarterback said, highly motivated.

NFL: Purdy contests first preseason as starter

Brock Purdy’s wish shows how high the expectations are of himself, because the quarterback hardly has much reason to complain. After all, he played a really good season with 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns, eleven interceptions and a strong quarterback rating of 113.0, and the 12-5 record, the top seed in the NFC and the entry into the Super Bowl leave little room for improvement for the team.

But Purdy wants to reach for the stars and is better prepared than ever. After playing his first preseason as QB3 and only returning to the field shortly before the start of the season last year due to injury, Purdy is now taking part in his first real NFL preparation.
