Bruce Springsteen has dismissed claims that he recently became a billionaire, although he admitted that he would like it to be true. In August, Forbes reported that The Boss had passed the $1 billion mark, stating, “Despite his discomfort with wealth, the Garden State guitarist has amassed a substantial fortune over six decades, estimated by Forbes at $1.1 billion, by singing about to its working-class roots.”
However, the business magazine admitted that no one from Springsteen’s team confirmed this estimate, which came three years after he sold his rights for a reported $500 million.
In a new interview with the Telegraph, Springsteen stated, “I’m not a billionaire. I wish I did, but they’re wrong. I spent too much on unnecessary things.” He added that after the difficult beginnings, before achieving success, he honestly earned his reward, because he “put in the effort.” In addition, he warned that if a musician’s career comes down to money, “that’s usually when people go downhill.” For him, it was all about protecting and nurturing the artistry, arguing, “If I failed at that, I would fail.” in everything.”
In the same story, Springsteen also spoke about an upcoming biopic featuring the actor Jeremy Allen White. “It was enough for me to see him in ‘The Bear,’ and I knew he was a real s**t, because he has that inner strength, but also a little sass,” he said.
Springsteen further reiterated his political views, after recently describing Donald Trump as “America’s tyrant,” saying, “I think there’s a tremendous fear here in America … of losing the things we hold dear; the danger of losing democracy, the rule of law and the peaceful transfer of power. He is not committed to any of those things. He is an insurrectionist. You know, he led a coup against the United States government, so he shouldn’t be anywhere near the presidency. Would you sleep soundly knowing that the nuclear codes were entrusted to Donald Trump? No. No one would.”
Bruce Springsteen also commented on his musical journey, from a follower of Dylan to one of the leading singer-songwriters of his generation, emphasizing the importance of a balance between the artistic and commercial aspects of his career.
