Bucharest Court. Clerk, injured after the shelves collapsed on her

A clerk at the Bucharest Court was seriously injured on Monday, after several shelves in the archive collapsed on her, announced the National Syndicate of the Judicial Registry (SNGJ) Dicasterial, which claims that there are “major” problems related to security and the working conditions of court employees.

“A shocking incident took place on November 18, 2024, at the Bucharest Court, where a clerk was seriously injured after several shelves from the archive of the 6th Civil Section collapsed on her. The event, which took place around 3:00 p.m., revealed major problems related to the security and working conditions of the employees of the courts of the Bucharest Court of Appeal and the Bucharest Tribunal, but also of many courts throughout the country. According to witnesses, several employees were in the archive when the unstable and unsecured structure of the shelves collapsed, burying the clerk under a pile of files and metal. The emergency medical crews arrived at the scene and managed to stabilize her, but her condition remains critical, being urgently transported to the hospital. The police opened an investigation to establish the exact causes of this earth-shattering event,” the union said in a press release.

SNGJ Dicasterial claims that, according to some sources inside the institution, the employees were “forbidden” to talk about the incident and an attempt was made to minimize the seriousness of the situation.

The union complained that many courts and Prosecutor’s Office units do not comply with minimum conditions of safety and health at work and/or fire prevention and extinguishing, but many of the leaders of these institutions would ignore this subject.

“These issues were raised including among the collective negotiations initiated by the Dicasterial SNGJ, but the Bucharest Court of Appeal, which has the capacity of employer for the staff from its own apparatus and from the courts located in the territorial area of competence, did not continue the dialogue and negotiation collective, although the first negotiation session took place in the summer of 2024”, the trade unionists mentioned.
