The portal insidethegames.biz, which presented the study, highlighted that the French capital, which hosts this summer’s Olympics, is at the top of the list for the second year, followed by Los Angeles, which will host the 2028 pentathlon, and New York in third place.
The ranking is based on an analysis of the relationship between sport and the city that also takes into account the opinion of social media, combined with the opinion of the leaders of international sports federations and major international sports media. The portal added that the connection of the given metropolis to the Olympics is also an evaluation factor.
In light of this, it is interesting that London was the first to drop out of the podium, the British capital, which hosted the 2012 Olympics, while Tokyo, the host of the 2021 pentathlon games, fell further behind, slipping from first place in 2022 to 13th position. What’s more: a third Olympic host, Rio de Janeiro, which hosted the 2016 Games, is currently only 61st in the ranking.
The portal noted that the ranking was strongly influenced by the American approach to sports, global marketing, if American cities, while emphasizing the presence of sports, also pay a lot of attention to entertainment. The validity of this aspect is exemplified by the bronze medalist of the ranking, in addition to New York, the ninth place of Miami or the 15th place of Las Vegas.
insidethegames.biz quoted Lars Haue-Pedersen, managing director of the ranking company, who highlighted:
for cities that want to build their sports reputation, investing in effective communication can bring significant benefits, sometimes even more than infrastructure development.
