Bugatti set a new record, this time with the help of the mistral. The hypercar with W16 engine is the fastest open top in the world.
Not long ago, Bugatti said it would stop chasing records. It seems that the French manufacturer’s need for speed cannot be stopped as Bugatti recently announced that it has set a new record with the Mistral hypercar.
Even though the W16 engine will no longer be used in future models, the manufacturer found the perfect opportunity to put it back in the spotlight. The W16 engine powered a customer’s car to a new record. Bugatti has announced that the Mistral, the Chiron-derived roofless hypercar, has set a new top speed record.
Bugatti breaks a new record with the W16 engine
When it was launched, Bugatti said the Mistral could reach a top speed of over 420 km/h, but the new record shows the car is capable of even more. The specimen used for the record attempt even belongs to a customer and managed to reach a top speed of 453.91 km/h, being almost 40 km/h slower than the fastest version of the Bugatti Chiron, a model that stood at Mistral’s base.
The man behind the wheel was none other than Bugatti test driver Andy Wallace. The same man, pilot with victory in the 24h Le Mans race, also drove the Chiron Super Sport 300+, which became the fastest car in the world. In the record attempt, Andy Wallace pushed the car to a top speed of 490 km/h.
Starting with the Tourbillon, Bugatti will make the switch to a new naturally aspirated V16 powered by no less than three electric motors for a total of 1,800 hp. In “normal” mode, top speed is limited to 380 km/h, but with the Speed Key, this is unlocked and the Tourbillon can reach 445 km/h. The Tourbillon can also accelerate from 0 to 100 in just 2 seconds.
