In order to increase the technological competitiveness of domestic semiconductor material, component, and equipment (materials and equipment) companies, the government will begin in earnest next year to build a ‘Trinity Fab’, a cutting-edge semiconductor test bed in connection with semiconductor chip manufacturing companies.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced at the National Research and Development Project Evaluation General Committee held on the 28th that the ‘Advanced Semiconductor Mass Production Linked Minifab Base Construction Project’ passed the preliminary feasibility study.
The minifab will be built in the Yongin semiconductor cluster with an investment of approximately 1 trillion won by the government, SK Hynix, and local governments (Gyeonggi-do and Yongin City), and will be used as a high-tech semiconductor test bed for small and medium-sized electronics companies.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy explained, “We plan to name the minifab ‘Trinity Fab’ to mean that the government, chip manufacturing, and small and medium-sized enterprises will become a Trinity and improve domestic semiconductor competitiveness through coexistence and innovation.”
Trinity Fab will be built in the same environment as a semiconductor mass production fab and plans to install about 40 pieces of process and measurement equipment essential for advanced semiconductor processes.
Through this, we plan to provide constant support for performance and verification evaluation of semiconductor components and development products in connection with demand companies and consulting by professional engineers in connection with SK Hynix. In addition, we plan to promote space rental for equipment companies that have difficulty verifying and evaluating developed equipment, as well as companies that have difficulty building and managing their own clean rooms.
The government plans to support domestic small and medium-sized companies in shortening the development period for new products by establishing a test bed. In addition, based on the established infrastructure, we plan to develop technologies linked to demand companies and foster professional talent for industry-academia-research semiconductor fields.
In addition, in connection with existing public fabs, we plan to provide multifaceted support to enable everything from evaluating the characteristics of semiconductor packaging products to performance evaluation for entry into mass production. Through this, it is expected to contribute to securing the technological competitiveness of semiconductor manufacturing companies and promoting their entry into the global market, as well as strengthening the stabilization of the domestic semiconductor supply chain.
The government announced that it plans to use Trinity Fab, a model of coexistence and innovation that connects global semiconductor demand companies and small and medium-sized companies, as its flagship, and to expand it to all industrial fields in the future.
