Bus collides with corn trucks and falls into a ravine in Mexico, at least 19 victims: one arrest

A tragic car accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday in the central Mexican state of Zacatecascausing the death of at least 24 people. The bus, headed for Ciudad Juarez, went off the road and crashed into a ravine after colliding with an articulated lorry he was carrying more. Local authorities and rescuers are still working to complete recovery operations, while an investigation has been launched to clarify responsibilities.

Accident in Mexico

L’accident it happened along theFederal Highway 45near the Osiris-Aguascalientes house, in the municipality of Guadalupe, when an articulated lorry transporting corn lost control of one of the trailers, which broke away and ended up colliding with thebus.

The impact caused the passenger vehicle to go off the road and end up in a ravine over 10 metres. According to the secretary general of the state government, Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza, and the coordinator of the Guardia Nacional, Juan Manríquez, the bus came from Nayarit and was transporting several people in the direction of Ciudad Juarez, on the border with the United States.

Victim toll

The death toll is tragic: the Zacatecas attorney general’s office confirmed at least 24 deadwhile 5 people were hospitalized in serious conditions at the local IMSS hospital.

Health authorities and rescuers are still working to recover the bodiesincluding some who fell into the ravine. Civil protection and security forces, including military personnel, responded to the emergency and are engaged in recovery operations and identification of the victims.

Traffic was temporarily interrupted and then partially reopened. At the moment there are no foreign tourists or migrants among the victims.

Investigations: one arrest

The tragedy, like that of the train derailment in Norway, immediately triggered an investigation to ascertain the exact causes of the accident and establish any responsibilities. The Zacatecas prosecutor’s office reported that aarrest warrant for the driver of the tractor trailer, who may be held accountable for the loss of cargo and the resulting accident.

The state government promised updates on the status of those hospitalized and made available a telephone number for the families of victims and survivors, through the Victims’ Protection Commission.

The authorities are working tirelessly to trace the cause of the accident and ensure support for all those involved and their families.
