Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund doesn’t have too many options in the left-back position in the current squad. Nevertheless, the BVB bosses apparently decided against signing an available player from Chelsea last summer.
Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell was actively offered to BVB during the recent summer transfer phase. This is what “Sky” reports in the “Transfer Update” show.
At Rheinlanddamm, those responsible at Borussia Dortmund discussed a possible commitment for the 27-year-old. Ultimately, a transfer of the 21-time England international was rejected.
However, the report does not reveal how expensive a Chilwell deal would have been for BVB. The left-footer still has a contract with the Blues until 2027, and according to the “Caught Offside” portal, he earns no less than 240,000 euros in salary per week in London, i.e. a whopping 12.5 million euros per year – a sum that people in Dortmund would certainly not have been willing to pay.
BVB could improve again in the winter
Although he is one of the top earners in the squad at Chelsea FC and is still one of the leading players as vice-captain, Ben Chilwell has fallen more and more behind from a sporting perspective in recent months.
Last season, the left-back made just 21 competitive appearances and was in a Chelsea starting lineup 13 times. Under team manager Enzo Maresca, the situation for the former Leicester professional is even more precarious: Ben Chilwell has only been allowed to play in the third round game of the League Cup against Barrow AFC (5-0).
According to Sky, it is entirely possible that BVB will continue to look for alternatives in the winter. There are only two trained left-backs in the squad, Ramy Bensebaini and Almugera Kabar, after Tom Rothe was handed over to 1. FC Union Berlin. Julian Ryerson could also play on the left, but is actually placed on the right.
