In connection with the recent media coverage of motor third party liability insurance (MTPL) and the green card, the CEFTA Secretariat has announced that it wants to provide the public with clear and detailed information on this topic.

Namely, as they recall, the CEFTA Joint Committee adopted Recommendation 1/2024 on October 9, 2024, which proposes to the parties to the CEFTA agreement measures to improve the process of third-party auto liability insurance on the CEFTA markets, writes eKapija.

Key measures include:

* Final goal (by October 2026): enabling drivers from one Party of the CEFTA Agreement to travel to another Party of the CEFTA Agreement without a green card or appropriate documents on MTPL third-party motor liability insurance.

* Medium goal (until October 2025): reduction of administrative fees for obtaining a green card and enabling MTPL insurance against third-party liability on the basis of license plates issued in the parties to the Multilateral Agreement.

In addition, the CEFTA Joint Committee called on the parties to fully digitize insurance documents and initiate electronic exchange of those documents. This digital transition aims to eliminate the need for physical insurance documents when traveling within the CEFTA region.

“These measures are based on the Action Plan for the establishment of a Common Regional Market (priority 3.3) and the Priorities of the CEFTA Presidency for 2024 (priority 2),” the CEFTA announcement concludes.
