“By the grace of God”… Donald Trump launched into an incredible tale of the assassination attempt he suffered at the Republican convention on Thursday night. “I stand before you in this arena only by the grace of Almighty God,” the former president said in his speech in Milwaukee accepting the Republican Party’s nomination for the November presidential election.
“As you already know, the assassin’s bullet came very close to taking my life. Many people have asked me what happened, and that’s why I’m going to tell you, and you’ll never hear it from me again, because it’s too painful to say,” he said as a preamble to a long tirade.
Speaking in a low voice, he began by describing his entrance to Butler, “in front of an enthusiastic crowd, to the music, on a beautiful, warm day.” Then, after about ten minutes, “I heard a loud whistle and felt something hit me very, very hard in my right ear. I thought, ‘Wow, what was that?’ It had to be a bullet.”

When the gunfire rang out, “I knew immediately that this was very serious, that we were under attack,” he said. “Blood was flowing everywhere. And yet, in a way, I felt safe, because I had God on my side.” “I’m not supposed to be here tonight,” he said, to which the delegates at the Republican convention chorused, “Yes you are!” giving him an aura of miracle.
He lingered again on this now historic sequence where we see him being evacuated from the platform of the meeting, his fist raised and his cheek bloodied, and escorted by agents of the Secret Service, responsible for the security of high political figures. “When I stood up, surrounded by the Secret Service, the spectators were disoriented because they thought I was dead.”

“I wanted to do something to let them know I was okay. I raised my right arm (…) and started yelling ‘fight, fight, fight’,” as if to urge them to fight. This image became a political asset that the Republican convention continued to highlight, because it illustrated, according to Republicans, the courage of a man who is being sought to be brought down and who never gives up.
“What is amazing is that before the shot, if I had not moved my head at that very last moment, the assassin’s bullet would have hit its target perfectly, and I would not be here tonight,” he said. He also said he was surprised by an “interesting statistic”: “the ears are the part of the body that bleeds the most.”
