BYD says it will launch three new plug-in hybrid models and three more electric cars in Europe next year.
right Autocar, BYD will launch three new plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) alongside three other electric models in Europe next year. The Chinese manufacturer is pushing to build a more comprehensive product range to increase its market share in European markets.
The Chinese company is the world’s second best-selling electric car maker, narrowly overtaken by Tesla in the second quarter of this year, and is rapidly increasing its market share in Europe after entering it in 2022.
Its European lineup is largely made up of all-electric models, but BYD recently launched a plug-in hybrid version of the Seal U crossover. In addition, the company believes that plug-in hybrids will play a role important in increasing sales.
BYD wants to increase the range of models it sells in Europe
BYD president Stella Li believes that PHEVs like the Seal U DM-i are becoming even more important, representing a bridge to full electrification for potential electric car buyers who still don’t want to switch to a motorless car with internal combustion.
“Many people want to try electric cars, but currently they have anxiety and hesitation, but this car gives them the solution,” said Stella Li. According to Li, this is particularly prevalent in China, where the popularity of PHEVs and range-extender electric vehicles currently outstrips pure electric vehicles.
The company will begin building cars at its new plant in Hungary by the end of 2025, with a new separate facility in Turkey coming on line soon after, making BYD the first Chinese car brand to open its own European factory.
