Thirty years ago, BYD was established as a start-up employing two dozen people, and today it is the first car manufacturer in the world that can be charged from ten million grids (it produced plug-in hybrid or purely electric cars). BYD produced the first five million electric cars in 15 years, and the second five million only took 15 months.
The anniversary car is one Denza Z9 volt. The model introduced in April this year can be ordered as a sports station wagon (shooting brake), station wagon or sedan. The car, dreamed up as a rival to the Porsche Panamera and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, will eventually be available in Europe.
Its special feature is that its rear wheels can be rotated by 20°, so despite its length of 5.24 meters and its wheelbase of 3125 mm, it can turn in a circle of 9.2 meters and can also drive sideways.
Equipped with advanced self-driving capabilities, massage chairs and two refrigerators, the Z9 is available with two types of powertrains. The plug-in hybrid combines a two-liter 207 four-cylinder gasoline turbo engine with three electric motors with a total of 640 kW (870 hp), while the purely electric variant is capable of a system output of 710 kW, i.e. 965 horsepower (also with three electric motors.)
Both models use BYD’s special, space-saving Blade battery, with a capacity of 38.5 kWh for the former and 100 kWh for the latter. According to Chinese standards, the PHEV variant can travel more than 200 kilometers in electric mode, the theoretical range of the BEV is 630 kilometers.
