Botanical Garden Cagliari: the history

The park was inaugurated in 1886under the direction of the botanist Patrick Gennarian Italian scientist who is still considered one of the most important figures in the study of botany. Around the early 1900s, this green corner had about 400 species of plants from many areas of the world, from India and Australia, from America, Africa, China and Japan.

Unfortunately, during the years of the Second World War, the garden was bombed and badly damaged, as it became the seat of a cavalry battalion. Fortunately, however, the library and the garden’s herbarium were saved and kept in a deconsecrated church located in Ghilarza.

After the end of the war, work slowly began again on rebuild the gardenIt took many decades and hard work to restore the structure.

Today, the garden is considered an important resource from a naturalistic, cultural, historical and even archaeological point of view. The structure, in fact, also includes several finds from the pre-Roman and Roman periodarchaeological sites such as the well, the famous Roman cistern of the botanical garden of Cagliari and the Gennari cave or Calidarium.

But let’s get to the real protagonists of this beautiful open-air living museum, the plants. The entire structure is divided into three large areas, which respectively host:

  • The Mediterranean plantsstarting with those typical of Sardinia.
  • The succulent plantsbetter known as “succulent plants”, which number around 1000 different varieties, grown both in greenhouses and outdoors.
  • Tropical plants.

In this green heart, in the centre of the capital of Sardinia, you can walk among different varieties such as the mastic tree, Pistacia lentiscus, the kermes oak, Quercus coccifera, the Buxus balearica and sempervirens, enormous Ficus magnolioidessuggestive felci.

You will be able to admire the most beautiful succulent plants, desert plants, together with monumental agaves, euphorbias, dracaenas and aquatic plants of unique beauty, such as delicate water lilies.

The Opening hours of the botanical garden of Cagliari may vary depending on the time of year. The park is open from Tuesday to Sunday, with Mondays closed, according to the following hours:

  • April, May, September and October: 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
  • June, July and August: 9:00 am to 8:00 pm.
  • November, December, January, February, March: 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

How much does it cost to enter the Botanical Garden? full price for the ticket is €4.00, while the reduced ticket is €2.00.

They will be entitled to the ticket with reduced payment i:

  • Children aged 6 to 17 years
  • Ticket holders for the archaeological site Su Nuraxi in Barumini
  • Members of the FAI (Italian Environment Fund)
  • Visitors to the Cultural Heritage and Civic Museums of the city of Cagliari.

Free entry

Children under 6 years of age, teachers accompanying school groups on guided tours, students and staff of the University of Cagliari visiting for study or research purposes, and disabled people and their companions can access the park free of charge.
