It’s time to replace our screen testing tool – we present our chosen successor.
Introduction, external
For nearly 18 years, we have been using some kind of professional measuring device to test the capabilities of displays and to calibrate the image of monitors used for work. The whole story started with a GretagMacbeth Eye One Display 2, which is still lurking here in one of the cabinets, but since then technology has developed and needs have grown, so it was later replaced by the X-rite i1 Display Pro, of which several copies used up over the years.
And now the time has come to step up again, and our choice is now marketed under the brand name Calibrite Display Plus HLfell on This is the top model of the Display series that replaces the i1 Display, one of the most important features of which for us is the use of the High Luminance sensor that gives it its name. This makes it possible to test the displays of HDR-capable monitors and TVs (and of course smartphones and tablets) with a luminance density of more than 1000 cd/m² with satisfactory accuracy.
We wrote in detail about monitor calibrators, their operation, and why they are needed years ago, in connection with our first calibrator. Although a lot of time has passed since then, the tools have also been renewed, but the essence of calibration has not changed.
In its external appearance, Calibrite Display Plus HL does not differ much from its predecessors, at most there is a difference in the colors, the silvery plastic has been replaced with black. The device still uses a USB connection, with the difference that now there is a Type-C connector at the end of the cable, not a Type-A, for which a Type-A/Type-C adapter is included in the box. Among the accessories, there is also a small blue fabric bag, which makes it easier to carry the calibrator, if for some reason we need to take it with us.
On one side of the device is the sensor (that is, the lens that covers it), on the other side there is a standard tripod thread, which can be used to calibrate a projector, for example, or make it easier to check the lighting in the room; the diffuser for the latter is located on the reversible lens hood. The length of the cable is 180 cm and it has a sliding weight, which helps to prevent the calibrator from sliding down the display during use.
