If you receive a call and hear an automatic band on behalf of PayPal, Klarna or iDEAL, there is a good chance that you are being scammed. The Fraud Helpdesk has received many reports about this.
“Nowadays, calls are made on behalf of various companies, including PayPal, eBay, iDeal, DNB and Klarna,” he said. writes the Fraud Help Desk. The calls are usually made in English, sometimes also in Dutch. “Anyone who answers will hear a tape with a menu of options.”
Via that selection menu you must then approve an order, payment or refund, etc writes NU.nl. If you do this, you will be connected to a call center employee. “People who were transferred were asked to provide access to the computer for various reasons,” the Fraud Help Desk tells the news site. “Subsequently, for example, purchases were made online or money was stolen from their bank account.”
The advice is to hang it up immediately
The organization says it is best to hang up immediately if you receive a call from such a caller. The authority also advises against using the options menu.
According to NU.nl, the Fraud Help Desk already received 342 reports about this form of fraud this month. According to the site, that’s the tip of the iceberg, as most people don’t report scams. Last month the Fraud Help Desk received 656 reports.
