Can a tricycle be driven with a Category B license? The rules established by the traffic law

On the streets of Romania there are more and more three-wheeled vehicles, which are a combination of a scooter and a motorcycle. According to traffic law, can a tricycle be driven with a Category B license?

The need for mobility has made the market for two- and three-wheelers very diversified. Motorcycles have smaller and smaller engines, scooters and mopeds are increasingly technological and for those who want more stability, tricycles were designed.

This last category is a combination of motorcycle and scooter. But, it has three wheels, not two.

What motorcycle can you drive with a Category B license

Recently, the law came into force that allows those with a Category B license to also drive motorcycles.

But, they have to take a specialized course and obtain a certificate attesting that they have acquired a number of practical skills for driving a two- or three-wheeled vehicle. But that will only allow them to drive certain types of such vehicles.

You can drive a motorcycle with a Category B license if:

  • has automatic transmission;
  • has a cylinder capacity of no more than 125 cm3.;
  • has a maximum power of up to 11 kW;
  • has a power/weight ratio of no more than 0.1 kW/kg;
  • is classified in Category A1.

For example, with a Category B license you cannot drive a motorcycle that has an engine of 250 cubic centimeters. And not one of 50 cm3, but which does not have an automatic gear shifter.

However, a scooter, a moped and even a motorcycle up to 125 cm3, with automatic transmission, can be driven by those who have Category B.

Can a tricycle be driven with a Category B license?

The traffic law places tricycles in the same category as two-wheeled vehicles.

However, the engine they have is very different. Because, for example, some have 600 cm3 engines, others 125 cm3. But they all have automatic transmission.

So, you need to check the details of the tricycle’s license plate to know if it can be driven with a Category B license.

For example, if in the Registration Certificate it is classified as L5e, it means that:

  • has an engine over 50 cm3;
  • maximum speed exceeds 45 km/h.

Which means that it can be driven by those who hold a Category B license. But, the condition is that the license holder must be 21 years old.
