Finding a parking space is not an easy task at all, especially in cities like Bucharest, Cluj or Iași. That’s why many drivers put their cars on the sidewalk, thus completely blocking pedestrian traffic, which is not legal. But according to the law, in 2025 you can park half on the sidewalk, half on the street, if you leave space for pedestrians?
Many drivers leave their cars where they can find enough space, on the sidewalk, on the crosswalk, even in intersections. The lack of parking spaces is not, however, an excuse to break the traffic rules imposed by the Highway Code.
Therefore, it is important not to block or impede the movement of other vehicles or pedestrians.
Because the law provides penalties both for those who park illegally on a public road and for those who block the sidewalks.
Can you park the car on the pavement in front of the house?
The Highway Code prohibits stopping or standing in certain areas or time slots. These areas are signaled by visibly placed signs.
To avoid such restrictions, some drivers leave their cars on the pavement. Only that Art. 72 of GEO no. 195/2022, regarding traffic on public roads, prohibits the occupation of sidewalks with immobilized vehicles.
The driver is obliged to leave space for the movement of pedestrians. Thus, you can park your car on the sidewalk in front of the house, but you must leave a space of at least one meter for pedestrians. Otherwise, you can receive a fine for illegal parking and your car can even be towed.
Fine for illegal parking on a public road
The fine for irregular parking applies both on public roads and for occupying the pavement.
The minimum penalty for irregular parking is 2 fine points, but it can reach up to 6 points in certain situations. The fine point is capped at 165 lei until the end of 2024. But from 2025, if the ceiling is not extended, it will represent 5% of the gross minimum wage per country.
Therefore, the fine point in 2025 could be increased to 202.5 lei. Which means that fines for irregular stopping or parking could start from just over 400 lei and could exceed 1,200 lei.
The same fines will apply if you park or park on the green space.
2025: Can you park half on the sidewalk, half on the street?
Traffic law states that cars can be parked on the pavement only if the signs and markings in the area allow it.
Also, there are many situations where it is not allowed to park the car on the road, even if the space allows it.
Therefore, drivers who park their car half on the sidewalk, half on the street, must take into account the road signs that are in that area and where they leave their car.
Because if parking is prohibited, either on the sidewalk or in the street, then the police will fine him, even if he violates the “only half a car” law.
In addition, the vehicle may be towed, as required by law, at the driver’s expense.
But if there is a sign on that stretch of road that allows you to park the car half on the road, half on the pavement, then it is legal to leave it that way.
