Canada, Mexico and China say that Trump’s tariffs will also hurt the US itself

Many experts interviewed by the media have also expressed the opinion that the introduction of such fees may lead to a significant increase in the prices of a large number of goods for US consumers – from cars to agricultural products, writes Associated Press.

D. Trump on his social media platform on Monday Truth Social wrote: “On January 20th, as one of my first executive orders, I will sign the necessary documents to impose a 25% tariff on all goods entering the US from Mexico and Canada across those countries’ ridiculous open borders.” He points out that thousands of people are entering the United States through Mexico and Canada, bringing with them crime and drugs at unprecedented levels. The new fees will remain in place until the influx of drugs, especially fentanyl, and illegal immigrants into the United States is stopped. “Both Mexico and Canada have every right and power to solve this long-simmering problem with ease. So we demand that they use their power. Until they do, they will pay a very high price!” wrote D. Trump. At the same time, he also directed his anger at China, writing that he had many conversations with China about the large amount of drugs, especially fentanyl, being brought into the United States, but there was no response. “Until this is stopped, we will impose an additional 10% tariff on China on top of any other additional duties imposed on all of their many products that are imported into the US.”

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said at a press conference that neither threats nor tariffs will solve the “migration phenomenon” or drug abuse in the United States. Citing a letter she agreed to send to Trump, she said Mexico had taken steps to prevent illegal migrants from reaching the U.S. border. However, the issue of drugs is said to be a problem of their use in the US society. She also added that Mexico would be forced to respond with tariffs on US goods, creating risks for joint ventures. The president pointed out that US car manufacturers produce some parts in Mexico and Canada. “If tolls go up, who will suffer? General Motors!” added the president.
