Teresa Ribera loses support from her home country Spain and the European Parliament for the candidacy for European Commissioner for Competition.
The position for intended successor to Margrethe Vestager comes with this at loose ends to stand.
Ribera, who was nominated in September, has come under fierce criticism for the way she handled the floods in Valencia and Castilla la Mancha.
The Spanish political party Partido Popular and the European faction of which it is part, the EPP, doubts to Ribera’s ability to fill the tough European position. Moreover, they believe that the commissioner-designate still has some explaining to do at home before she can move to Brussels.

Europe cannot be Teresa Ribera’s hiding place.
She cannot be a European commissioner. pic.twitter.com/C3OHUFX7bU

Ribera is Spain’s Minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. In Europe she would become commissioner for ‘Clean, Fair, and Competitive Transition’. In this capacity, she must keep tech giants from the US and China in line.
