candidate for US permanent representative to the UN changed her position on Ukraine – Teller Report Teller Report

Member of the US House of Representatives Elise Stefanik, whom Donald Trump offered the post of permanent representative to the UN, has changed her position on supporting Ukraine and its accession to NATO, CNN reports. According to her press secretary, the congresswoman now fully supports Trump’s program and his desire to find a way to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

US Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, who may take the post of permanent representative to the UN in the Donald Trump administration, has changed her previous position on Ukraine and the country’s admission to NATO. This was reported by CNN.

As the publication notes, in 2022, the congresswoman actively advocated for Kyiv to join the alliance, and also supported the provision of large-scale military assistance to Ukraine, arguing that the West “must do everything possible” to support the country.

Now, after Stefanik was announced as a candidate for the post of permanent representative to the UN, her press secretary Ali Black, in a conversation with reporters, emphasized: the congresswoman fully supports Donald Trump’s position. However, she refused to clarify whether Stefanik still advocates for Ukraine to join NATO.

“Stefanik fully supports President Trump’s ‘peace through strength’ policy agenda and will follow him as commander in chief on the best way to end the war in Ukraine,” Black told CNN.

Stefanik’s actions in the House have also varied over time. According to the publication, at first she advocated the adoption of bills in support of Ukraine, supported sanctions against Russia, as well as numerous packages of military assistance to Kyiv. However, in April of this year, she voted against a $60 billion aid package for Ukraine, citing concerns about excessive spending and saying it was better to prioritize the refugee crisis on the southern US border.

Recall that US President-elect Donald Trump officially offered Elise Stefanik the position of American permanent representative to the UN earlier this week. In his words, “Elise is an incredibly strong, tough and smart fighter who stands for America First.”

As CNN notes, the choice of Stefanik for this role “indicates a toughening of the US position towards the UN.” The congresswoman frequently criticizes the international body, particularly over its handling of Israel, and last month she said the Biden administration should consider a “complete reassessment” of Washington’s UN funding if the Palestinian Authority continues to push for Israel’s UN membership.
