Capitals signs rookie contract with Mateiko

“Capitals” selected 18-year-old Mateiko with number 90 in this year’s draft. This is the highest number with which a Latvian hockey player has been drafted since 2015, when the Toronto “Maple Leafs” selected Mārtiņas Dzierkalas with number 68.

Mateiko played the previous two seasons in the Quebec Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and this season scored 23 goals and 20 assists in 49 games for the St. John’s Sea Dogs.

The Latvian was part of the “Capitals” pre-season training camp and participated in one official test game, after which he returned to the QMJHL team.
