Car chased by Spanish authorities, discovered in Romania
During the day of November 5, the border police officers of the Coast Guard carried out an action to prevent and combat international traffic with stolen cars.
During the action, a car with Spanish license plates was discovered in Constanța. A 51-year-old man was behind the wheel.
Following the checks, the border police found that the car is listed as an asset wanted for confiscation. The alert was introduced by the authorities in Spain.
The car, valued at approximately 250,000 lei, was taken over by the police and is now at the institution’s headquarters for further investigations.
Also, the border authorities are investigating the man behind the wheel of the car, under the aspect of committing the crime of concealment.
Stolen car detection cameras
The General Inspectorate of the Border Police launched, in September, a tender for an automatic car identification system. The video cameras will film the license plates mounted on the cars entering and leaving Romania. They will operate day and night on the south and west roads.
The video systems will be connected to national and international databases and will automatically check each vehicle.
When it detects a vehicle that has been declared stolen, the system will issue an alert and the stolen vehicles will be stopped at customs before entering or exiting the country.
Systems for monitoring and identifying stolen cars will be installed at each internal border crossing point of the Schengen Area, on the border with Bulgaria and Hungary. The cameras will be positioned approximately 150 meters from the checkpoints.
The estimate is that by 2026 at the latest, these cameras should be operational.
