New and second-hand car registrations in Romania registered a significant increase in 2024, according to data provided by Acarom.ro.
In December 2024, new car registrations reached a volume of 13,807 units, marking an increase of +21.4% compared to the same month of the previous year.
For the entire year 2024, the total number of new registered cars reached 151,105 units, which represents an increase of +4.49% compared to the year 2023, when 144,611 units were registered.
In the top of Romanians’ preferences are the following brands (new car registrations):
-Dacia: 44,430 units;
-Toyota: 12,818 units;
-Skoda: 10,612 units;
-Hyundai: 10,268 units;
-Renault: 10,252 units;
-Volkswagen: 9,623 units;
-Ford: 6,493 units;
-Mercedes-Benz: 5,430 units;
-BMW: 4,895 units;
-Suzuki: 4,435 units.
Down for EVs, but up for hybrids
New electric cars fell by -32%, with a total of 9,765 units registered in 2024. In contrast, hybrid models gained in popularity, with their number increasing by +35% to 58,470 units.
The used car market continues to grow
The market of second-hand cars registered for the first time in Romania grew significantly in December 2024, by +66% compared to the same month in 2023, reaching a volume of 29,606 units. In total in 2024, 328,834 units were registered, increasing by +3.95% compared to 2023.
This increase indicates an increased interest of Romanians both in the purchase of new and second-hand vehicles, marking a positive evolution of the car market in Romania in 2024.
