Carlos Ghosn calls the Nissan-Honda-Mitsubishi deal a “disguised takeover” by Honda

Last week Mitsubishi announced that it was joining the Honda-Nissan alliance, and former Nissan-Mitsubishi strongman Carlos Ghosh said in an interview that he believes Honda is planning a “disguised takeover” of Nissan and Mitsubishi.

He believes that Honda is by far the biggest of the three Japanese automakers, so he puts the company in the “driver’s seat” to take control. As he said:

I can’t imagine for a second how (the alliance) between Honda and Nissan will work, unless it’s a disguised takeover by Honda of Nissan and Mitsubishi, with Honda in the driver’s seat. It will be a takeover, a takeover in disguise.

Ghosn also said a relationship with Honda was never on the table during his time at Nissan. He was CEO from June 2001 until April 2017 when he stepped down but remained chairman of the company. He initially joined Nissan in June 1999 as COO when the Renault-Nissan alliance was formed.

Before joining Nissan, Ghosn played a key role in the restructuring of Renault while serving as Executive Vice President of the French automaker. During his time at Renault, he became known as the “Cost Killer” because of his tough restructuring agenda.
