Car|Pilot. The fourth Superb – a good car, although “wow!” is missing

The new Škoda Superb does everything that the Superb did in the past.

  • From top to top and from top to top. From behind the new Superb, the Rogosi manor in Ruusmäe village, Rõuge municipality, Võru county can be seen. The limousine-like spacious Škoda with a diesel engine used less than a quarter of the contents of its 66-liter fuel tank to reach the place nearly 300 km from Tallinn. Photo: Karl-Eduard Salumäe
Škoda has an important year. Even before the new Kodiaq, which Äripäev met in Spain, the fourth generation Superb was presented. As expected, these two models share as much of the technology as possible, right down to the three multi-function rotary knobs bearing the proud name Škoda Smart Dials and the gear selector moved to the steering column.

Superb is accompanied by the fame of the perfect family car. It would be an understatement to say that the previous two generations found car critics easy. Rather, it is appropriate to sum up the received assessments briefly: wow! And the more time goes on, the stronger the fact that it just speaks in favor of the Superb no be another SUV. At least according to those same critics…

Having now driven the new Superb to the other end of Estonia and back, I can confirm that it continues to offer a ratio of controllability and rolling comfort that no popular park jeep can even come close to. Everything else is also like the Superb of yesteryear: hatchback or station wagon body, limousine legroom in the back row, huge trunk, prestigious feeling. And yet, wow! is missing this time.

Evolution instead of revolution

Not that there is anything wrong. It’s just that Škoda is doing the same trick with the Superb for the third time.
